5 Self-Care tips for 2021: it’s time to focus on yourself

2021 Self-Care tips by plusonecomic

After a year full of stress and anxiety, we want to propose simple actions for finding wellbeing in the day-to-day.

Every time a year comes to an end, it is time to reflect on all the good and bad that has happened to us and to prepare new resolutions for the next one. But 2020 has not been a ‘traditional’ year. We are all looking forward to its end and leaving behind the fears, anxiety, and stress it has caused in many of us. However, even from difficult times, valuable lessons can be drawn. If the past few months have taught us anything, Taking care of ourselves is something we must do naturally but continuously, something that is almost unconsciously part of us. Taking care of ourselves first is fundamental if we want to take care of others. Here are 5 Self-Care tips you can put on your schedule and start building your long term well-being.

Book some ‘me time’ every day

It can be short five-minute breaks at work or long breaks on the couch –depending on how tight your schedule is– but every day you should reconnect with yourself. It's not about stopping to check out the social media, but about compiling yourself, your emotions, feelings, learning... A time to get to know yourself better and prepare for the challenges that may come. Study yourself, and you will be surprised by the result.

Sleep more

We always tend to put our sleeping hours at the end of the list of priorities, but it is widely studied that it is one of the best tools to enjoy good health. And it's free. We've talked to you before about how to improve your sleep hygiene, so this time the trick is simple: go to bed half an hour early. It's a small change –just one less episode in your favorite series– but it will eventually become a habit that will increase your energy the next day.

Start a journal

We may have forgotten, but writing by hand is an excellent exercise if we look for relaxation and peace of mind. But we can go a step further and make our journal not only a list of our emotions and feelings but also a place to show gratitude for the positive things that happen to us every day. It may not be easy at first to identify them, but they are there, and writing them down will make us value them more.

Revisit your social media

Social media has been a great tool to keep us connected during the pandemic. But there is no doubt that they are very time consuming and can sometimes be a source of anxiety when we try to compare our lives with those we see on the screen –which is not usually real in most cases. So we are not going to recommend that you get rid of your Instagram app, but that you reflect on who you are following and if that content is really contributing something positive in your life. With so little time available in our daily lives, what matters is not the quantity but the quality. An in-depth social media spring cleaning can be an excellent way to start the year with a clearer head.

Do some exercise regularly

Physical wellbeing is the first –and most obvious– step to good holistic health. And exercise is one of the fundamental pillars for achieving it. That doesn't mean you have to start running an hour every day or lifting weights at the gym until you can't take any more. But introducing an exercise routine into your week is the best way to stay active, whether it's a long walk in the park, a meditation session, or trading in your car for your bike. It doesn't matter how you do it, but move your body!
